Erectile dysfunction, or
impotence, is a common health condition that affects almost every man at some
point in his life. It is a sexual disorder that makes it difficult for a man to
be able to achieve or maintain erection on a consistent basis. ED can happen at
any age, but it’s more popular in elderly men who are above the age of 60.
Erectile dysfunction is
known to disrupt the sexual life of a man and cause emotional and relationship
issues. It also results in low self esteem and low self confidence in many men.
Most men suffering from ED are too embarrassed to discuss about this condition
with their doctor. However, the success of ED drugs like Generic
Viagra and Generic Levitra has encouraged many men to seek
treatment.
The common symptom of ED
is the failure to maintain an erection during the sexual intercourse for at
least 20% of the time. Occasional failure to get erection is considered normal
and is quite common, but repeated failures are a sign of erectile dysfunction
and need treatment.
Erectile dysfunction is
not the same as lack of sexual desire and it may not necessarily affect a man’s
ability to get an orgasm. To find the cause of your ED, the doctor will ask you
a few questions about your health and conduct a physical exam. He may also
perform some lab tests as well as mental health tests.
Impotence can be cause
as a result of physical cause, psychological cause or even both. The common
physical causes of impotence include: diabetes, high cholesterol, heart
disease, hardening of arteries that can cause poor blood circulation and high
blood pressure, smoking, kidney disorders, pelvic surgery, neurological
diseases, side effects of prescribed medicines, drug abuse, alcoholism and spinal
cord injury or surgery. As the man ages, he is more likely to be a victim of
these health conditions and therefore ED is more common in older men.
If a man is able to
achieve an erection by masturbating or reading something sexual but fails to
get one during sexual intercourse, then the cause of ED is most likely
psychological. This is because the brain plays a vital role in the process of
achieving erection since it triggers physical events that eventually lead to
erection. Common psychological causes of erectile dysfunction are: depression,
performance anxiety, stress, fatigue, relationship problems, fear and guilt.
